rains. we do have wind advisories across portions of california, nevada and northern portions of the rockies where we can see wind gusts between 50-70 miles an hour. those conditions are very dangerous, not just the flooding and snow but strong winds. flooding across northern california and southern portions of oregon where we are talking about several inches falling today. we're expecting another storm as we head into tomorrow. we do have basically drier conditions across northern california. that will be the story for monday. next storm on tuesday will be taking more of a northerly track. portions of oregon will begin with the heaviest. northern parts of california and expecting heavy mountain snow. over a foot in some of the higher elevations of sierra. so i do want to bring you to the northeast because we're going to have to deal with some rain showers, nothing like california but heavier downpours in portions of upstate new york. >> gregg: maria, thanks very much. >> heather: holiday cheer in short supply on wall street. this is no ordinary year for stocks. >> gregg: diff

northern california cannot catch a break. they are bracing for another drenching on top of the 20" of rain that has fallen in some places. the latest storm is the fur the to slam the region in just a week. the nonstop rain created sinkholes across northern california. this is one road that gave way. it sliced through the utility lines and the winds snapped trees and tower lines and left tens of thousands in the dark. in san francisco, officials say the rain overwhelmed the sewer lines and they had to release 80 million gallons of partly treated sewage into the bay. and now, this is rough out this. >> the last five days they have gotten in some cases close to 2' of rain. a lot of the areas in the mountains and the moisture is squeezed up across the mountains so close to 2' in a few areas. this is the mountains of northern and central california and they could see an additional 1" to 4" of the next round and cold temperatures in the east. but here is the next storm system, portions of oregon, northern california, and washington, you will, again, get an additional 1", 3" or 4" of rain and 1'

. national weather service issued a winter storm warning for lake tahoe area, northern california. not just tonight, but through sunday. 2-5 feet easy. snow levels down there as well. as low as 4,000 feet at times. tough traveling in the mountains. three of these things. the parent low. brings them in. as the systems roll in, they come in tonight, late, tomorrow morning, then saturday morning early and sunday all day. first two events are over night events into the morning hours. the model bears it out. at 5:00 p.m., this model updated and it slowed the progression of the system. 11:00 p.m. tonight, showers still north, right? the showers in the north bay. then it rains 4:00 a.m., the morning commute, still nothing in san jose. 6:00 a.m., scattered showers, heavy showers in santa rosa. wind advisory going on. 8:00 a.m., wet on the roads, cloudy in concord. 10:00 a.m., it breaks open. this model breaks it out. by lunchtime, scattered showers and more scattered showers into the afternoon. tonight at 10:00 p.m. i will be back and the model will update, i am sure it is because it updated there.

for that part of the region and some more snow expected, a good portion of northern california if you are taking interstate 5 up through shasta, be extra careful. there is a chance we could have some freeway closures. look at this winter storm warning out towards the sierra. snowfall 2 to 5 feet. that's a lot of snow and that could cause some problems on the roadway as we head into friday, saturday and sunday. here's our forecast model for today. we're starting out dry an increase in the high clouds. we do bring in a chance for rain showers up in the north bay. you will notice the south bay's still dry but then into early friday morning we're tracking rain clouds. we'll have wet pavement to start out our can friday morning commute. for today, increasing clouds, the chance of a shower up in the north bay, especially toward the latter portion of the afternoon. a pretty active forecast, some rain and wind, tapering off into the afternoon. a second storm producing heavier rain. saturday morning and possibly a third one into sunday as well. have to keep an eye on the rivers and the streams out there

section of the northern california coast. kron 4's charles clifford has details >>reporter: earlier today in washington the president gave a green light to the national oceanic and atmospheric adminstration, or noaa, to come up with a plan for expanding two of northern california's marine sanctuaries. let's take a look at a google earth map. this is a view of san francisco looking north across the city. to the west, off the marin coast is the gulf of the farallones national marine sanctuary seen herer in green. it covers more than 1200 square miles of ocean and includes the farallon islands and the waters around point rays. to the north is the cordell bank national marine sanctuary which includes more than 500 square nautical miles. now, under the proposed expansion the cordell sanctuary would be more than doubled in size, as would the farallones sanctuary which would be extended north to point arena in mendocino county. if approved the expanded sanctuaries would include more than 50 miles of coastline and protect more than 4500 square miles of ocean. northern california representative ly

british columbia. for us, sunny and breezy today will do it. over the rest of northern california, if you're heading out, dense fog advisories posted until 9:00 this morning from the southern end of the sacramento valley, right down through the san joaquin valley. 65 degrees in monterey, 67 and sunny. out of the bay area, mostly sunny skies at the airport, winds out of the northwest to about 30. new york's got rain. but for the rest, just clouds in denver and chicago. chicago, just 34. los angeles at 73. back in the bay area, the numbers today look nice. mid-60s will do it. 63 at pacifica, 64 for san jose. 66 in santa rosa. how about the extended forecast? next chance for rain for the bay area coming in wednesday. not a big rain maker. showers could linger into thursday. latter half of the weekend, you have to stay tuned, because right now some of the models are saying we'll get more rain on thursday, friday and saturday. some say we're not. so we're going to broad brush it and say partly cloudy skies. we will get wet on wednesday. we will have more details in the next 30 minutes. in the

raindrops when things remain unsettled through saturday. northern california, heading towards tahoe, there are chain requirements on highway 50 but no requirements on interstate 80. so this would be a good day to head up towards the mountains. high 30 degrees there. 51 in sacramento with areas of patchy fog reported. closer to home around the bay area once again these are those temperatures. 54 in sunnyvale. 52 in milpitas. so a lot of 50s to go around. 50-degree readings in brentwood, antioch, very similar to what we saw yesterday. low to mid-50s definitely jacket weather but once again no need for an umbrella. we haven't been able to say that in a while. 54 degrees in berkeley 52. in san rafael. and 55 in santa rosa. here's your forecast. over the next several days, dry today, wet again tomorrow, and then into saturday. sunday through new year's day, right now looks dry. and then things once again look unsettled by the middle of next week. that is a check of traffic and weather. back to you guys. >> thank you. >>> breaking news in walnut creek a shooting involving a police officer
